Speaker 1: Hey everybody, this is your digital marketing coach,

00:01:21
neal Schafer.

00:01:21
Welcome to episode number 394 of my podcast.

00:01:26
You know, as a fractional CMO, I tend to work with a lot of

00:01:30
entrepreneurs, small businesses and, yes, startups, and I

00:01:38
realized going back into my podcast catalog that I had yet

00:01:40
to create content specifically for startups.

00:01:41
Now I just got back from a business trip in Japan and there

00:01:44
is a huge boom in startup culture there, with a lot of

00:01:48
investment from a lot of cities and prefectural governments

00:01:51
being funneled into encouraging startups to invest in their

00:01:56
cities or states or prefectures.

00:01:58
In fact, I'll be going to an event in Nagoya, japan, which is

00:02:02
going to be hosted by the Aichi Prefecture.

00:02:04
You'll hear a lot more about that in upcoming episodes called

00:02:07
Tech Gala.

00:02:08
So I'm really excited to go a little bit deep into startups

00:02:12
over the next several weeks as I gear up for that event.

00:02:15
But let's begin with the overwhelm that startups face

00:02:22
when they deal with marketing.

00:02:23
See the startups that I've dealt with and I'm sure if

00:02:25
you're a startup listening to this as well your main challenge

00:02:28
is really your product, developing that product,

00:02:31
creating that MVP, the POC, and then getting feedback and then

00:02:36
getting initial customers and going from there.

00:02:38
But obviously, above and beyond that, how do you switch, how do

00:02:43
you transform your organization from an outbound prospecting to

00:02:49
an inbound marketing, gaining brand awareness and, at every

00:02:53
step of the way, really improving your cost per lead

00:02:57
time, per lead time, per conversion, cost per conversion

00:03:00
and all those other marketing metrics as you grow your

00:03:04
business?

00:03:05
One customer by one customer.

00:03:08
So, as someone who's worked with entrepreneurs and written

00:03:11
extensively about digital marketing and social media

00:03:13
strategy, I've seen how these challenges play out and how to

00:03:17
overcome them.

00:03:18
So what I'm going to go through here are the top, let's say,

00:03:22
six or so challenges that I see the startups that I've dealt

00:03:26
with face and some tips on how you can overcome them.

00:03:31
Now, this podcast episode is geared towards startups, but you

00:03:35
don't have to be a startup to take advantage of this advice,

00:03:37
guys, because it really is applicable to anyone and

00:03:39
everyone listening to the show.

00:03:41
So let's begin with challenge number one building brand

00:03:46
awareness.

00:03:46
Now, in the old days, before social media and the internet,

00:03:50
it was really really hard to build brand awareness without

00:03:53
massive budgets.

00:03:54
That is not the same today.

00:03:57
So, obviously, if we go into the SCS framework that I talk

00:04:02
about in digital threads, search email social.

00:04:05
Well, we're starting off with non-existent email, obviously,

00:04:09
but it doesn't mean we can't take advantage of the search and

00:04:14
the social to try to build brand awareness From a search

00:04:19
perspective.

00:04:19
It really comes into building our library of content, of

00:04:23
gaining authority in Google's eyes, and the interesting thing

00:04:28
is this is where the emergence of generative AI can really

00:04:31
benefit startups.

00:04:32
Now I'm not talking about a one-button press create content,

00:04:36
but I'm talking about using generative AI to help you

00:04:39
co-create content, help you optimize your content for SEO,

00:04:43
make sure you have information gain and all the other SEO best

00:04:46
practices in this era, post helpful content updates.

00:04:50
But nevertheless, it is as easy as ever, once you understand

00:04:55
how to use ChatGPT and tools like that as an assistant to

00:05:01
scale your content production, to be able to help you build

00:05:04
this library of content so that not only will it feed search

00:05:08
engines, but if prospective customers happen to land on your

00:05:10
website, or when you feed that content into social media,

00:05:15
attracting people back to your website, there'll be deeper

00:05:18
content for them to dig into.

00:05:19
And if you do this right, every single piece of your library of

00:05:23
content will also help generate demand for your products and

00:05:26
services.

00:05:28
Now, obviously, there is more to it than just that.

00:05:32
There is a niche strategy.

00:05:34
Right of really focusing on niche markets before expanding

00:05:38
with your brand awareness.

00:05:39
Now, you're probably doing this as a startup anyway, trying to

00:05:43
focus on the niche to really generate momentum, right,

00:05:46
generate interest, generate revenue.

00:05:48
What have you?

00:05:49
Well, this can be the same with your content, for your library

00:05:53
of content, for SEO purposes You're not going to be targeting

00:05:56
those keywords that every other big brand is targeting, but

00:05:59
really focusing on the niche where you can bring the biggest

00:06:02
value to your content, to your potential customers and, you

00:06:07
know, be creating content that just doesn't exist on the

00:06:10
internet.

00:06:10
Right, and with that in mind, that's sort of the search side.

00:06:15
If we switch over to the social side, right, obviously,

00:06:19
leveraging platforms like LinkedIn for credibility.

00:06:22
Now, if you're a B2C brand, obviously Instagram, tiktok

00:06:26
might be the places where you're going to plant your flag.

00:06:28
Or if you're targeting a more aged demographic, maybe Facebook

00:06:31
, but if not, it's going to be LinkedIn.

00:06:34
And even if you are a B2C brand , I would still say that

00:06:36
LinkedIn helps establish this credibility, not only for your

00:06:40
corporate brand but for your employer brand, and can also

00:06:43
help with partnerships going forward, obviously, within

00:06:48
social media.

00:06:49
Now, we're not going to be promoting our product.

00:06:52
We really want to tap into storytelling to differentiate

00:06:55
our brand.

00:06:55
Now, this is a book that I've yet to write, something that I'm

00:06:59
working on in the background, but really, the story of not

00:07:03
only your brand but also your founders right, I think that

00:07:06
every startup has an interesting story as to why you were

00:07:11
founded, who founded you, what was their background, what led

00:07:14
them to this discovery of this need, of the solution of the

00:07:19
product, and everything along the way.

00:07:21
In fact, the storytelling can also include some sort of behind

00:07:24
the scenes that is as relevant on a site like LinkedIn to teach

00:07:29
others as it is on a visual site like a TikTok or an

00:07:32
Instagram, so that storytelling really differentiates your brand

00:07:36
and makes you an only one type of existence in social media.

00:07:41
Obviously, you want to sprinkle the storytelling with more

00:07:45
information about your company, about your technology, about

00:07:48
your services, about your library of content, but really

00:07:52
it's this focus on the niche and , using storytelling, it's this

00:07:57
combination that can really help your brand stand out in a very,

00:08:01
very crowded space in order to build brand awareness.

00:08:05
If you have a little budget, obviously tapping into

00:08:08
influencer marketing, even at the nano or micro level if you

00:08:12
have more budget to build trust with your audience early on can

00:08:16
really benefit you as well.

00:08:18
In fact, if you've read digital threads, you know that I really

00:08:21
focus on building brand awareness in social media,

00:08:25
really focusing on creating or having user-generated content

00:08:30
created on your behalf, either through customers, partners,

00:08:34
fans or through these influencer collaborations, and then going

00:08:37
from there.

00:08:38
So you rely less and less on your own content.

00:08:41
Let others do the speaking for you.

00:08:42
But obviously, if you want to tap into influencer marketing

00:08:45
early on at a greater level, you'll definitely want to read

00:08:48
the Age of Influence, the definitive book on influencer

00:08:51
marketing strategy.

00:08:52
So hopefully, with this advice, you began to build that brand

00:08:56
awareness.

00:08:57
Obviously, it takes time.

00:08:58
It does not happen overnight and I know a lot of startups

00:09:01
that go immediately for the PR play.

00:09:03
They want to get featured in a top magazine, top media.

00:09:06
It costs a lot of money.

00:09:08
It can be hit or miss.

00:09:09
Obviously, if you have a lot of budget to do that, that's

00:09:19
awesome in your own following and community.

00:09:22
That will also help build your brand awareness in areas where

00:09:27
traditional media might not have as much influence as well.

00:09:30
So, like I said, I know a lot of startups that go immediately

00:09:34
for the PR budget.

00:09:34
But, man, with that same PR budget, if you can shift a

00:09:38
little bit of that into paid social media ads, what have you?

00:09:41
It can go a pretty long way right, especially when you

00:09:45
consider that PR agencies often require monthly retainers for a

00:09:49
minimum X month contract.

00:09:50
So just a shift in mindset can really help you, and you could

00:09:54
also try this way for a few months, see if you get traction

00:09:59
and if not, at least you would have done your best at the

00:10:01
minimum budget before shifting over to more of a traditional PR

00:10:05
strategy.

00:10:06
So these are things I've seen play out in different ways, but

00:10:09
wanted to give you that advice because obviously there are paid

00:10:12
options that will help you accelerate that, but they aren't

00:10:16
necessarily the best for every potential startup.

00:10:20
All right, let's move on to challenge number two defining a

00:10:24
target audience.

00:10:25
So the idea here is you really want to identify your ideal

00:10:31
customers to avoid wasted efforts.

00:10:34
Obviously, you know, reading the Lean Startup or any of these

00:10:37
classic books on startups, it's all about that minimum, viable

00:10:43
product, the proof of concept, finding those early adopters

00:10:47
right, and we may think we know who the ideal customers are, but

00:10:52
we might not right.

00:10:54
And this is where social media well, I would say your library

00:10:59
of content as well becomes a very, very interesting

00:11:03
experimental testbed, because, as we put out different content

00:11:07
for different audiences that we think are our ideal audience, we

00:11:11
are going to get feedback based on the engagement.

00:11:14
And this is where, if we use a little bit of paid ads, we can

00:11:17
then target micro audiences and see which resonates with this

00:11:22
content better or worse.

00:11:23
So, whether it is organic or paid, social media and the data

00:11:29
that it provides us gives us the ability to really hone in on

00:11:35
who our ideal customers might be and who they are on social

00:11:39
media, where they are in social media, which is only going to

00:11:43
positively impact our brand.

00:11:45
Building organic efforts there Now, in Maximize your Social, I

00:11:50
wrote a lot about building a social media marketing strategy,

00:11:53
about starting with data.

00:11:55
Using the analytics or even simple surveys to define who

00:11:59
your customers are and where they spend their time online is

00:12:02
going to be essential for your success.

00:12:05
So, as part of this, as I hinted at, you should be

00:12:09
emphasizing experimentation Early on test different

00:12:13
messaging to see what resonates.

00:12:15
It is an iterative process, just as being a startup and

00:12:19
developing your first products and services is also an

00:12:21
iterative process.

00:12:22
If you treat social media and your content in the same way and

00:12:26
you experiment with a little bit of paid advertising, that's

00:12:29
really gonna go a long way to help you find traction with

00:12:32
specific audiences there.

00:12:34
That's only gonna help your efforts there going forward, all

00:12:39
right.

00:12:39
Challenge number three budget constraints, I think I've

00:12:42
already hinted at.

00:12:43
I've had startups that have spent a lot of money on PR

00:12:47
relationships where they might've been able to more

00:12:50
wisely spend that money elsewhere.

00:12:51
I've also seen startups spend a lot of money on, say, google

00:12:55
ads or even social media ads, without having all of the other

00:12:59
fundamentals in place to take advantage of the experimentation

00:13:04
, of the targeting, et cetera, et cetera, or just simply they

00:13:08
weren't ready for prime time yet , spending money on Google ads

00:13:11
hoping to get conversions when they were not going to get any.

00:13:14
So there is an order of things in digital marketing that I talk

00:13:19
about pretty passionately in digital threads, and this is

00:13:22
really, as a startup, your limited budget.

00:13:25
We need to see how we can market effectively with those

00:13:29
limited resources.

00:13:30
This is really my forte, to be honest with you.

00:13:32
So you know, drawing from Digital Threads, where I talk

00:13:36
about aligning your budget with business goals, every dollar

00:13:41
should go towards measurable growth.

00:13:43
Whether it's building your email list, whether it's lead

00:13:46
generation, whether it's building a community on social

00:13:49
media, really all of your marketing efforts should

00:13:52
translate into a KPI, which translates into some sort of

00:13:58
business growth.

00:13:59
So here is where we can look at , well, what are the free or

00:14:06
really cheap ways of leveraging resources to get the biggest

00:14:11
bang for our buck?

00:14:12
So obviously, this comes down to people, process and tools,

00:14:17
and I have dedicated chapters on each one of these in digital

00:14:21
threads.

00:14:21
For the people, it is really tapping into the outsourcing

00:14:27
opportunities that exist.

00:14:28
There are thousands, tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of

00:14:33
thousands or millions of people out there in the world who are

00:14:36
already doing digital marketing and all the different aspects of

00:14:39
it for a lot of really famous brands and maybe not so famous

00:14:44
brands, but there are just so many people out there that can

00:14:48
help you around the world in a very, very economically

00:14:52
efficient way.

00:14:53
That is going to be something that startups should absolutely

00:14:56
leverage.

00:14:57
Now, obviously, it takes time to project manage, it takes time

00:14:59
to find, but it's, at the end of the day, going to be less

00:15:04
expensive and I believe in many ways, the work might actually be

00:15:08
better, especially at the startup phase right, where

00:15:11
you're wearing a lot of hats.

00:15:12
You have a lot going on.

00:15:13
You may not have the money to invest in a dedicated marketing

00:15:17
resource, which gives you all more of the reason to start

00:15:20
working with a community of freelancers that can help

00:15:24
implement all of your digital marketing.

00:15:25
You're not going to hand over your strategy to them, right?

00:15:28
You need to own the strategy.

00:15:29
Read digital threads.

00:15:30
Read Maximize your Social.

00:15:32
Read the Age of Influence.

00:15:33
Develop your strategy.

00:15:34
But in terms of some of the work that is actually involved, you

00:15:37
can definitely find people to work with and achieve great

00:15:43
success without having to spend a lot of budget.

00:15:46
So that's the people, right?

00:15:48
We have the process.

00:15:50
So, within the process, obviously, there are free things

00:15:53
we can do.

00:15:54
Organic social media is free, right.

00:15:57
Email marketing, once you are able to build a list.

00:16:00
Yes, it takes time to actually craft emails, but should you

00:16:04
create emails and put them in a sequence and use marketing

00:16:06
automation?

00:16:07
This is where we are creating processes and, with the help of

00:16:11
generative AI in terms of our content marketing operations, we

00:16:15
can really streamline this and really scale at.

00:16:18
Once again, a very, very limited budget.

00:16:21
And then, finally, we have the tools right again, a very, very

00:16:24
limited budget.

00:16:25
And then, finally, we have the tools right.

00:16:26
We have tools like Adobe Express or Canva for design that

00:16:28
can help us create logos or any other visual thing that we need

00:16:32
, very, very inexpensively and also, more importantly, very

00:16:36
quickly right.

00:16:37
There are other very, very inexpensive or even free email

00:16:41
marketing slash CRM platforms.

00:16:43
Social media marketing dashboards do not have to cost a

00:16:46
lot.

00:16:46
In fact, you may not even need a social media marketing

00:16:49
dashboard as you start out.

00:16:50
So another interesting development is that the social

00:16:55
media platforms themselves are adding AI, like meta.

00:16:58
You know adding AI to Facebook, to Instagram, linkedin If

00:17:03
you're a paid member, you have an AI solution there as well and

00:17:06
even YouTube is adding more and more features.

00:17:08
For instance, you upload a YouTube video, you can generate

00:17:11
a free transcript.

00:17:12
So you don't even need to have a budget for a transcript tool

00:17:15
like otterai to be able to create a transcript and then

00:17:19
repurpose that with the help of a chat GPT.

00:17:21
So you know thinking about the tools and the process and the

00:17:24
people together, you can see how savvy startup marketers today

00:17:30
can get a heck of a lot done with a very, very limited budget

00:17:33
.

00:17:33
Once again, you'll want to reference digital threads for

00:17:36
more information on what I'm talking about here.

00:17:39
Challenge number four generating quality leads With startups.

00:17:46
I believe it's really about that lead quality.

00:17:50
If you get a quantity of leads that lead your startup into

00:17:55
multiple directions, that can challenge you and sometimes

00:17:59
break you, because you really want to stay focused on that

00:18:02
ideal customer, on that ideal early adopter.

00:18:04
So, by prioritizing lead quality and I talk about this in

00:18:09
maximizing LinkedIn for business growth Now, the lead

00:18:11
quality maybe this is more for B2B brands out there, although

00:18:14
for B2C generating initial interest, maybe it's more about

00:18:19
the customer quality but in maximizing LinkedIn for business

00:18:22
growth, I talk about how LinkedIn really is a goldmine

00:18:26
for startups, especially in B2B, and focusing on building

00:18:33
relationships with decision makers rather than casting a

00:18:35
wide net.

00:18:35
So this comes down into how you target your content, target

00:18:40
your relationship building on a platform like LinkedIn, and this

00:18:45
is where you will want to create lead magnets.

00:18:50
Once again, I have a dedicated chapter about this in digital

00:18:53
threads.

00:18:53
But whether it is a free trial, whether it is a webinar,

00:18:57
whether it is an ebook, you know if I was to come out with an

00:19:00
ebook that said marketing or digital marketing for startups

00:19:05
versus digital marketing for entrepreneurs versus digital

00:19:09
marketing for business owners versus digital marketing for

00:19:12
executives.

00:19:12
I am targeting four distinctively different personas

00:19:17
, four distinctively different audiences, and if I define a

00:19:23
quality lead as coming from a sweet spot that I foresee in the

00:19:26
market, then I should be targeting my content towards

00:19:30
that.

00:19:30
And obviously one of the best ways to generate leads is

00:19:34
through not only lead magnets but the follow-up email

00:19:37
marketing and marketing automation that we can do after

00:19:39
that right.

00:19:40
So that's where those lead magnets come into play.

00:19:44
When we have the right target.

00:19:45
And I would say you know, for B2C brands as well, if we were

00:19:49
offering coupons or free product or BOGO, it's really the same

00:19:52
thing.

00:19:52
Your decision of what product you are giving away or providing

00:19:57
a discount on, together with the messaging, the branding, the

00:20:00
communication that you provide around that is also going to

00:20:04
help define who those target customers are going to be.

00:20:08
And, on another note, if you were doing outreach whether it

00:20:14
is for your B2B brand on LinkedIn or B2C brand on an

00:20:19
Instagram or, you know, a Facebook or what have you really

00:20:24
leveraging the generative AI tools to help you personalize

00:20:28
that outreach?

00:20:28
It is not hard to do, but I think you know we've gotten to a

00:20:32
point where people are very used to these mass outreach

00:20:37
tools that exist that are very, very impersonal, that don't

00:20:41
really speak to that individual person, and with social media

00:20:45
profiles or individual business.

00:20:48
But with social media profiles, with websites, with all the

00:20:50
information that are available about businesses, about people

00:20:54
on the internet, and with the help of generative AI, we can

00:20:57
really personalize and optimize every single message that we

00:21:03
send out, whether it is a direct message on an Instagram or

00:21:06
LinkedIn or an email right.

00:21:08
That will improve the engagement and it will improve,

00:21:12
ultimately, the number of people that respond and, more

00:21:16
importantly, how they respond in a positive way.

00:21:18
So generating quality leads is always a challenge and I'm not

00:21:24
promising you it's going to be easy, but hopefully following

00:21:27
this advice will help you a little bit by prioritizing lead

00:21:30
quality over quantity and really staying hyper-focused on those

00:21:35
lead magnets that you offer as well as on your outreach All

00:21:39
right.

00:21:40
Challenge number five competing with established brands.

00:21:43
This is always going to be a challenge, regardless of

00:21:47
industry.

00:21:48
Really, the key message here is position creativity and agility

00:21:55
as startup advantages.

00:21:56
You could be more creative, right, you can be quicker,

00:22:01
because bigger brands are often bogged down in processes, in

00:22:04
larger administrations working with multiple agencies, working

00:22:08
with a larger team that's often geographically distributed,

00:22:11
right?

00:22:11
You don't have those issues and you could be a heck of a lot

00:22:14
more creative.

00:22:14
You can tap into current trends quicker than they can, because

00:22:19
they work on longer plans, on chains of approval that, once

00:22:25
again, sometimes go across geographies that require time

00:22:28
and what have you?

00:22:29
You don't have those restrictions, right.

00:22:33
So, as I talk about in, maximize your Social.

00:22:36
You can't outspend them, but you can outsmart them,

00:22:40
experiment with emerging platforms or unique campaigns

00:22:45
that they haven't adopted yet.

00:22:46
So, if you are tuned in and this is advice that I give in

00:22:52
digital threads as well, but you should be tuned in to role

00:22:57
model content creators in your industry, right?

00:23:00
If you are plugged in and you have your algorithm on whatever

00:23:05
social media app you're on, tuned in to what your target

00:23:08
customer would be seeing in their social media feed and I

00:23:12
give advice on how to do this in digital threads you would be

00:23:16
able to understand the current trends in terms of memes with

00:23:22
TikTok, memes with TikTok or, you know, content that gets

00:23:24
engagement on LinkedIn, whatever it is, and you can then begin

00:23:29
to see ways of being inspired by those for your own brand,

00:23:33
because businesses often there's this gap between the content

00:23:36
that businesses are publishing on social media versus those

00:23:40
that social media users and especially content creators, are

00:23:42
creating.

00:23:43
You can bridge that gap a lot faster by being in tune and

00:23:47
being more nimble and agile with your content creation.

00:23:51
And you know, we see influencers do this all the time, and I

00:23:55
think of a platform like TikTok I think of like a Duolingo, like

00:23:59
a language learning app that just absolutely, you know,

00:24:03
dominated TikTok and was able to really harness it for their

00:24:07
growth.

00:24:08
Right, because they were early there and they were very

00:24:10
creative in their content, very agile, and they absolutely

00:24:13
crushed it.

00:24:14
You know, we could say the same thing about Chipotle.

00:24:16
Chipotle really wasn't a household name, I think, until

00:24:21
they leveraged TikTok extremely intelligently.

00:24:25
It doesn't have to be TikTok, it could be LinkedIn, it could

00:24:27
be Instagram, it could be any network.

00:24:29
But this is where social media organic social media, with a

00:24:33
little bit of paid boosting as well can really help you.

00:24:36
And, once again, if you don't have that creativity, this is

00:24:39
where collaborating with content creators as part of this

00:24:42
influencer marketing initiative, of tapping into the creator

00:24:46
economy, can help foster that creativity, can help you get

00:24:50
directly inspired by content creators that are working

00:24:53
directly on your brand and that can be the beginning of some

00:24:57
wonderful creativity that can help you compete with

00:25:01
established brands, especially when it comes to social media.

00:25:05
All right, we are now at challenge number six, and I talk

00:25:09
about this order of things in marketing, especially digital

00:25:13
marketing, and challenge number six is really the scaling.

00:25:16
Right Now, what I talked about here I talked about very

00:25:20
randomly and anecdotally and, hey, this is all easy to do.

00:25:24
This is all not easy to do.

00:25:26
This requires a little bit of time in order to do this, and I

00:25:30
know a lot of startups and, as a fractional CMO, I see it as

00:25:33
well without a dedicated resource even if it is an intern

00:25:36
, a part-time resource or hiring someone like myself to help in

00:25:40
those early weeks or months, it could be hard to be consistent

00:25:43
with all this, the consistency that you need in order to build

00:25:46
the brand awareness, develop leads and do everything that

00:25:47
I've been talking about.

00:25:48
That you need in order to build the brand awareness, develop

00:25:49
leads and do everything that I've been talking about.

00:25:50
So, once you get to a certain point where you're doing some of

00:25:53
this, it's all about how startups can grow sustainably.

00:25:59
So in Digital Threads, I talk about treating digital marketing

00:26:02
like a flywheel about building momentum with consistent efforts

00:26:07
across the right channels.

00:26:09
Momentum with consistent efforts across the right

00:26:13
channels, and two things here that I'd like to recommend when

00:26:15
it comes to automation and scaling.

00:26:16
The first is I have a dedicated chapter in digital threads on

00:26:19
content repurposing.

00:26:20
Once you build that library of content, that becomes the core

00:26:24
of your repurposing engine, your repurposing flywheel, right,

00:26:29
and that's going to help you expand your reach, especially,

00:26:32
you know the library of content is textual for search engines,

00:26:35
but should you expand upon that based on all the other advice I

00:26:39
provided on creating visual content, whether they're images

00:26:43
or videos, or even audio content , if you want to dig into a

00:26:47
podcast as a way of developing leads, which is a very savvy way

00:26:50
of doing it in B2B industries.

00:26:52
A lot of startups are experimenting with that.

00:26:55
Another highly recommended tactic, one of many that we can

00:26:58
talk about here but repurposing content, repurposing the digital

00:27:02
assets that you already have, will help you scale your

00:27:06
marketing efforts and help you, obviously, expand your reach

00:27:10
across platforms, across content mediums, when done right.

00:27:13
We also have, you know, scaling AI tools are going to help us

00:27:18
scale, are going to help us become more effective as we

00:27:21
create custom GPTs, as we fine tune these large language models

00:27:25
with our own content.

00:27:26
The results are only going to get better and more relevant and

00:27:29
the whole process is going to get better and more relevant and

00:27:30
the whole process is going to become more efficient.

00:27:32
And we also need to talk about marketing automation, right, as

00:27:36
a way, on the email marketing side, of really fine tuning and

00:27:42
helping you scale all of your efforts as you map out this

00:27:45
customer journey.

00:27:46
What are the touch points you want, right?

00:27:49
And when I talk about lead generation, of really you know,

00:27:52
mapping lead generation into this customer journey map and

00:27:57
the touch points with your marketing automation and I know

00:28:00
this sounds very complex, it doesn't have to be complex, it

00:28:02
can be very, very easy.

00:28:03
But scaling through marketing automation and mapping of that

00:28:07
customer journey, including the lead magnets, including the

00:28:11
different triggers for lead generation, the different ways

00:28:14
you want to respond as your customers move through your

00:28:18
funnel, this is going to be an area that's really going to help

00:28:22
you and it could be as simple, you know, for B2C brands.

00:28:25
Obviously it begins with your abandoned cart emails, right,

00:28:29
but it goes way above and beyond just that, right, with B2B

00:28:34
brands with a longer sales cycle , obviously this is where I

00:28:37
believe the marketing automation is even more important because

00:28:39
you need to maintain that relationship over time.

00:28:41
But you also need to be providing the right information

00:28:45
at the right time, and this is where marketing automation

00:28:48
platforms really shine.

00:28:50
So I talked about a lot of things here and I want to sort

00:28:57
of summarize with a few practical steps, a few threads

00:29:01
if I may borrow from digital threads that are woven into

00:29:05
these six different challenges.

00:29:07
Number one is this importance of staying data-driven Measure

00:29:12
what works and double down on it .

00:29:14
And over time maybe you began on a few different platforms and

00:29:18
then you realize that you know what.

00:29:19
We're not getting any traction on one platform, but 90% of our,

00:29:23
80% of our traction is coming from another 80-20 rule.

00:29:26
Let's double down on that.

00:29:28
We don't have to be everywhere.

00:29:29
Let's find what's working and go from there.

00:29:32
We can be an experimental stage because we're a startup, we

00:29:35
don't have this legacy, we don't have a legacy audience or a

00:29:38
legacy brand.

00:29:39
Let's actually use that to our advantage.

00:29:42
And in parallel, I cannot emphasize agility enough.

00:29:46
Right, as a startup, your ability to pivot is your

00:29:49
superpower.

00:29:50
Use it to experiment and optimize, and I've already given

00:29:53
you a lot of advice here on how to do that.

00:29:54
I also want to encourage you to leverage relationships.

00:30:00
Startups thrive on connections.

00:30:02
Build partnerships, collaborate , tap into content creators and

00:30:07
influencers.

00:30:08
So marketing doesn't have to be a startup's biggest hurdle.

00:30:14
With the right strategies, you can turn challenges into

00:30:18
opportunities.

00:30:19
If you're looking for more insights, obviously check out

00:30:23

00:30:24
Maximize your Social, maximizing LinkedIn for Business

00:30:28
Growth.

00:30:28
I have written these all for big brands and small brands, right

00:30:33
For entrepreneurs, for startups, for small businesses.

00:30:35
I think you're going to find a lot of actionable advice and I'd

00:30:39
be curious to hear from you.

00:30:40
This is another book that I am working on, a specific digital

00:30:44
marketing for startups book, among many other books.

00:30:47
I'm always sort of tossing around a few ideas and I'm also

00:30:51
trying to figure out, as a startup myself and every book is

00:30:53
its own startup which of these ideas has more traction.

00:30:56
So you can help me by letting me know which of these

00:31:00
challenges resonates most with you.

00:31:02
Reach out, let me know.
