Can rethinking your approach to social media scheduling drastically improve your engagement?
Find out as I challenge the conventional reliance on scheduling tools and advocate for a more hands-on, direct engagement strategy.
Today's episode is all about rethinking a common tool in our digital marketing toolbox: the social media scheduler. Inspired by my work on revising "Maximizing LinkedIn for Business Growth" and my analysis of various content types, I've come to realize that the traditional approach of scheduling link-based content just isn't cutting it anymore. Platforms continue to deprioritize this type of content, and staying ahead means diving deeper into the feed and engaging in real-time.
We'll explore why relying too heavily on scheduling tools can actually hinder your visibility and engagement, and discuss practical steps to become more nimble and present in your social media strategy. Plus, I'll share insights on which platforms and content types can still benefit from scheduling, and a method to balance scheduled posts with spontaneous engagement.
Whether you're a digital marketing pro or just starting out, this episode is packed with actionable advice to help you make a bigger impact on social media. Let's dive in!

00:01:15
Neil Schaefer.
00:01:15
Hey everybody, neil Schaefer here, your digital marketing
00:01:19
coach, and welcome to episode number 380 of this podcast.
00:01:21
Before I get into today's topic , I want to give you some of the
00:01:25
latest news that I am watching that I recommend you watch.
00:01:28
You know, every week I look for updates that would be of
00:01:33
interest to you as your digital marketing coach, and you know,
00:01:36
email marketing is usually the hardest one to find new
00:01:39
information on.
00:01:40
It really is a mature and stable industry.
00:01:41
Social media, believe it or not , is pretty stable as well these
00:01:45
days.
00:01:45
I mean, meta has a big event coming up, but really where the
00:01:49
news is happening, the trends that I think you need to stay
00:01:52
aware of, happens really in the search and AI space.
00:01:56
So an interesting update that Cloudflare and Cloudflare.
00:02:00
I don't know if you're familiar with them, but if you have a
00:02:02
website, we often use a CDN or content delivery network to
00:02:06
cache our web content throughout the servers around the world to
00:02:11
deliver faster performance.
00:02:13
I am a proud user of Cloudflare's enterprise service,
00:02:17
which actually is included in my BigScoots website hosting
00:02:21
plan.
00:02:21
If you're on WordPress, I highly highly recommend
00:02:24
BigScoots Scoots website hosting plan.
00:02:26
If you're on WordPress.
00:02:27
I highly highly recommend Big Scoots, and they just announced
00:02:32
that they are going to create a new marketplace that will let
00:02:34
websites charge AI bots for scraping.
00:02:35
And this really gets down to the conversation of is it
00:02:39
ethical for AI bots to scrape websites?
00:02:42
Well, I guess, if you have information out there in the
00:02:45
public because you want to get indexed in search engines, I
00:02:47
don't know if there's any ethical issues about that.
00:02:49
But should AI bots pay for including your information in
00:02:54
large language models?
00:02:55
And we've seen big brands like the New York Times and big
00:02:59
publishers make agreements with open AI.
00:03:01
But what about the businesses out there, especially if you
00:03:04
operate in a niche industry and you create niche content that's
00:03:07
very, very hard for large language models to source, or
00:03:10
you run your own website, like I do, and you're adding valuable
00:03:13
content, valuable contributions to our understanding of various
00:03:17
topics, on an almost daily basis .
00:03:19
Well, now there's going to be a way to monetize that if you are
00:03:24
on Cloudflare, so that's a really, really interesting
00:03:26
development.
00:03:27
I think we are going to continue to see more.
00:03:29
There's still a lot of tension between large language models
00:03:33
and AI scraping and the content that's created by businesses and
00:03:36
content creators, so keep tuning in to what's going to
00:03:40
happen there.
00:03:41
Also, there was a really, really great article that I wanted to
00:03:43
share with you from Ahrefs, and it's all about how to optimize
00:03:48
your content, for it used to be called SGE, or Google's search
00:03:54
generative experience.
00:03:55
Now they're just calling it Google AI overviews, and these
00:03:58
are the overviews that you see at the very top of websites.
00:04:02
Now it was announced back in May 10th of 2023.
00:04:06
It was launched in May 14th 2024.
00:04:09
And recently, on August 15th 2024, they have expanded this to
00:04:13
the United Kingdom, india, japan, indonesia, mexico and
00:04:16
Brazil.
00:04:17
So it is beginning to permeate the internet and most businesses
00:04:22
that get a decent amount of search engine traffic are really
00:04:25
worried.
00:04:26
How is this going to affect them?
00:04:27
And this, you know, the advice that Ahrefs gives, together with
00:04:31
all the advice about how do we get our content to appear in AI
00:04:35
search results, is really the same, and it really is about if
00:04:40
you rank well organically, you have a better chance of ranking
00:04:44
well in these AI overviews.
00:04:46
So, you know, the first thing is obviously target direct match
00:04:51
queries.
00:04:51
So if you can achieve first page rankings on Google, I mean,
00:04:55
ai overviews are often sourced in the top search results.
00:04:58
So at the end of the day, they are a byproduct of having really
00:05:01
, really good SEO, and in fact, they say, the higher your
00:05:05
content ranks, the greater the probability of its inclusion in
00:05:08
an AI overview.
00:05:09
So there's a little bit more advice here, and once again,
00:05:12
you'll want to go to neilschafercom slash newsletter
00:05:16
and make sure you sign up, because I share all the links
00:05:18
and more information there on a weekly basis.
00:05:20
But it's just another indication that this is nothing
00:05:27
new, that these old best practices are still important.
00:05:30
Now there is one different thing I'd like to point out is that
00:05:34
this is just for the AI overview box in Google.
00:05:37
But AI search engines are not limited to just backlinks to
00:05:42
understand authority.
00:05:43
They're not limited to just spidering the web.
00:05:47
They grab content and mentions from anywhere and everywhere and
00:05:53
they're really good at making meaning of that and
00:05:55
understanding the context behind it.
00:05:57
And this is where you see a lot of people talking about search
00:06:00
everywhere optimization.
00:06:01
So that is a little bit different, although there's
00:06:05
always been a part of that.
00:06:06
You know we've heard about like social signals.
00:06:09
If you do well in social media, somehow the search engines are
00:06:12
are looking at the social signals as well, but it really
00:06:15
does indicate that volume of and this is what some people are
00:06:19
preaching.
00:06:19
I don't see the data to back this up yet, but just volume of
00:06:22
mentioned, the better.
00:06:23
Your PR is right.
00:06:23
Another reason why I'm leaning into book publishing now because
00:06:26
it's going to get my name out there.
00:06:27
It's going to get my book names that are associated with me out
00:06:29
there and hopefully it's going to help me have better PR,
00:06:33
better digital PR.
00:06:33
That's going to help me long-term as a personal brand in
00:06:37
the landscape of search engine optimization.
00:06:39
All right, well, that's the gist of the news that I wanted
00:06:42
to report on this week, on to my personal updates.
00:06:45
So thank you once again for all of your support for maximizing
00:06:48
LinkedIn for business growth.
00:06:50
The 99 cent sale does end at the end of this month, that is,
00:06:55
september 2024.
00:06:56
I will be increasing the price of this book, so this is your
00:07:00
last chance to get it at this launch price.
00:07:02
Make sure you go to neilschafercom slash.
00:07:04
Maximizing LinkedIn for growth that's one word, and you'll see
00:07:09
a directory of all the different retailer sites in which you can
00:07:11
buy the book.
00:07:12
I mean, even if the price goes up to $1.99 or $2.99, it's still
00:07:16
going to be a bargain for the content that I deliver.
00:07:19
And if you're curious, if you go to the Amazon reviews, you'll
00:07:22
see it's already collected a number of five-star reviews, as
00:07:25
well as some endorsements, and I'll share with you the latest
00:07:28
endorsement, from none other than Joe Polizzi, founder of
00:07:33
Tilt Publishing and author of Content Inc, as well as, I mean,
00:07:36
the godfather of content marketing, and I quote a
00:07:39
masterclass from one of the real LinkedIn influencers.
00:07:41
If LinkedIn is important to your business, this book is a
00:07:44
must read and thank you, joe, but I think that really says it
00:07:48
all.
00:07:48
Switching over to digital threads you're going to hear a
00:07:50
lot more about this and I do hope, either today or tomorrow,
00:07:54
to be uploading it to Amazon and putting it on pre-sale for an
00:07:59
October 1st launch.
00:07:59
I do plan on having a pre-sales campaign for digital threads.
00:08:03
If you want to take advantage of that and get access to a
00:08:08
webinar that I plan to do on my recommendations and how to use
00:08:12
ChatGPT for all of your digital marketing, including all the
00:08:15
different ways in which I personally use it, I think this
00:08:18
is going to be a very special webinar.
00:08:20
It is the first time I am doing this and it is only going to be
00:08:24
for those that take part in the pre-sales campaign and if you
00:08:28
take part in that.
00:08:29
It's going to be real easy.
00:08:30
You basically pre-order and then send me a screenshot and
00:08:33
then I will invite you to the webinar and even if you can't
00:08:36
make the webinar, you'll get a recording.
00:08:37
So, once again, neilschafercom slash newsletter to make sure
00:08:41
you hear about that special offer.
00:08:43
And it's going to be very time limited, like you'll have only a
00:08:45
week to act upon that.
00:08:47
All right.
00:08:48
Well, lots of things going on, but today I want to switch gears
00:08:52
and I want to talk about the topic of scheduling content in
00:08:57
advance for social media, and it really comes, or, I should say,
00:09:01
the way I'm thinking about this has been inspired not just by
00:09:05
writing digital threads, but even more so, by writing
00:09:08
Maximizing LinkedIn for Business Growth, and it's actually a
00:09:11
revision of Maximizing LinkedIn for Business Growth, and it's
00:09:12
actually a revision of Maximizing LinkedIn that I'm
00:09:15
working on as we speak, based on an analysis that I did of
00:09:20
different content types on LinkedIn what's performing well,
00:09:23
what isn't, that I prepared, actually for those that saw the
00:09:26
webinar for my pre-sales campaign for Maximizing LinkedIn
00:09:29
I know that was a real roundabout way of saying it and,
00:09:32
at the end of the day, what LinkedIn has done, like what
00:09:35
every other social network has done has really deprioritized
00:09:38
link content and the thumbnail that used to come when
00:09:44
publishing link content is just a fraction on LinkedIn of the
00:09:46
size it used to be, to the point where it just doesn't make
00:09:49
sense to publish link-based content.
00:09:51
And I think that a lot of schedulers that we use that I
00:09:58
use are really on the default understanding that there is a
00:10:00
lot of link content that you have.
00:10:01
You have new blog posts, you have new webinars, new events,
00:10:03
new promotions, and a lot of it is link-based and you can recue
00:10:08
you know good performing links from social media and basically
00:10:13
create a queue that is several months old of essentially
00:10:17
link-based content.
00:10:18
And I think that a lot of big businesses I know I myself,
00:10:21
because I publish four blog posts a week this has been how I
00:10:24
operated as well and the problem is that that content
00:10:27
just is not going to perform well.
00:10:29
And when you read digital threads, you're going to see a
00:10:32
graph of social media referred traffic to my website over time
00:10:36
and you'll see just how small it has gotten and it's not going
00:10:40
to increase.
00:10:40
So it's really about and I talk about this in digital threads
00:10:44
this link and bio approach.
00:10:46
But, more importantly, you really need to be active in the
00:10:51
feed to understand what to publish in the feed.
00:10:53
This is social media marketing 101, but we sometimes and I am
00:10:57
guilty of this as well, which is why I want to talk about it we
00:11:00
sometimes get over-reliant on these scheduling tools and we
00:11:03
feel the need to schedule content in advance and we can
00:11:06
check that box batch process and move on and I realize it's
00:11:10
effective.
00:11:10
But it's really ineffective if your content isn't getting any
00:11:13
visibility.
00:11:13
When you are in the feed on a daily basis, not only do you
00:11:16
understand those new content types, new ways of expressing
00:11:21
content, you know changes in content.
00:11:24
For instance, when you are in a social media scheduler, there
00:11:27
are certain types of content that you can't schedule in
00:11:29
advance.
00:11:30
You can't schedule threads in advance, like you know, multiple
00:11:34
posts on X or even multiple threads on threads.
00:11:37
You can't publish polls in advance.
00:11:40
You can't publish carousel posts on LinkedIn in advance.
00:11:43
There's all these different things and in fact, you might
00:11:45
think that your links are getting more visibility when
00:11:46
they're not.
00:11:47
And in fact, you might think that your links are getting more
00:11:48
visibility when they're not.
00:11:49
And you might think that your photo is getting maximum
00:11:52
visibility when, if you're in the feed, you realize that
00:11:55
LinkedIn is really prioritizing images and really, I think,
00:12:03
compared to what I understood before, you can post that an
00:12:04
even larger image size than you might have known.
00:12:05
You don't realize if your horizontal videos or your
00:12:07
vertical videos are doing well, based on what you see in the
00:12:10
feed.
00:12:10
You don't see that on LinkedIn and I'm really leaning heavily
00:12:13
into this for this revision that I'm writing for Maximizing
00:12:16
LinkedIn on collaborative articles.
00:12:18
You don't see those collaborative articles come into
00:12:21
your feed.
00:12:22
So if you spend more time in the feed, you inevitably find
00:12:26
that you know what this content that I scheduled a few weeks ago
00:12:29
.
00:12:29
It just ain't working.
00:12:30
And when you look at your analytics, it's even more so.
00:12:33
That point Now, looking at my own social media scheduler and
00:12:37
those that know me I'm a huge fan of Social B and I still use
00:12:40
them.
00:12:41
I do believe that there are some platforms where it is still
00:12:44
okay, like Twitter, and I still say Twitter.
00:12:47
Twitter is still based on link content.
00:12:51
It's not to say that link-based content still does as well as
00:12:53
it used to, and it's not to say that Twitter still has the same
00:12:56
active user base that it used to , but that is one platform and
00:13:00
also just the volume, generally speaking, compared to other
00:13:04
platforms, where it's okay to publish more content on X that
00:13:07
need to actually have, you know, at least a few posts a day to
00:13:11
be seen.
00:13:11
I think it's okay to continue to rely on social media
00:13:15
schedules Not ideal, but it's okay.
00:13:17
Pinterest is another one where Pinterest, in essence, is a
00:13:20
search engine.
00:13:21
So it is okay, and I'm a big fan of pin generator.
00:13:24
We'll put the links in the show notes and I do still use that
00:13:27
to schedule my content.
00:13:28
I think that those are fine.
00:13:30
Short form video is an interesting one For me.
00:13:33
Short form video was the final frontier for me to sort of get
00:13:37
active on TikTok and other platforms and I still batch
00:13:40
process and I still schedule videos and they have done okay.
00:13:44
They do better on some platforms than others.
00:13:46
If I want to take it to the next level, maybe I won't, but
00:13:49
for now I think it's still okay for those platforms, and I'm
00:13:52
talking TikTok, youtube Shorts, instagram Reels.
00:13:57
Scheduling YouTube videos, I think is okay.
00:13:59
So, neil, well, where the heck should we not be scheduling in
00:14:02
advance?
00:14:03
I think it's those strategic networks where you want to make
00:14:06
the biggest impact and where you have the biggest potential to
00:14:10
have the biggest impact For me right now, that's LinkedIn.
00:14:13
Just because of the visibility that you can get on LinkedIn
00:14:17
that is really, really hard to get on other platforms.
00:14:19
I would say the same thing with Instagram.
00:14:20
Instagram also still has a lot of potential, as well as the
00:14:24
short-form video platforms of TikTok and YouTube.
00:14:26
But many people that I know, like myself, they have a hard
00:14:30
time of constantly creating that content anyway for those
00:14:33
platforms, unless you're a true, you know, tiktoker or video
00:14:36
content creator.
00:14:37
So if scheduling is the first step to get your content out
00:14:41
there, I say go for it.
00:14:42
But I think, especially when we look at LinkedIn, when we look
00:14:46
at Instagram now I don't mention Facebook, because the potential
00:14:49
for a Facebook business page to have content that goes viral is
00:14:54
, you know, I don't want to say next to nothing, but it's very,
00:14:56
very low at this stage.
00:14:58
So when you look at it that way , right, if you could ditch the
00:15:03
scheduling tool and if you were publishing similar content on a
00:15:06
LinkedIn that you did on a Facebook or on an Instagram, you
00:15:09
can see how, when you publish at the moment or you're using
00:15:13
different formats that you can't use a scheduler for, you could
00:15:16
actually be doing similar things on these other platforms as
00:15:20
well, using their native features, using the Facebook
00:15:22
poll native feature, which I know is not readily available as
00:15:25
it used to be, but definitely Instagram has a poll feature and
00:15:29
it may only be on stories, but I think you get the point.
00:15:31
So the idea is we need to be a little bit more nimble, we need
00:15:35
to be living more in the feed.
00:15:36
I think that's really the important thing.
00:15:38
And the scheduler not only does it take us away from the feed
00:15:42
and understanding what is trending at the moment in the
00:15:44
feed, but it also takes us away from the engagement, and I think
00:15:48
the whole idea is let's schedule our contents, that we
00:15:51
have more time for engagement.
00:15:52
But I think a lot of businesses they check the box.
00:15:55
It's like did we publish three posts this week?
00:15:56
Okay, great, let's move on.
00:15:58
You gotta remember the engagement because you gotta
00:16:01
remember the way that algorithms work.
00:16:02
They look for social signals and if you're just publishing
00:16:06
content and having a one-way conversation without engaging
00:16:08
with other people, you might have your super fans that
00:16:11
continue to engage with your content, but I tell you, as
00:16:13
human beings, we're going to be engaging more with those that
00:16:16
engage with us, so you need to make sure that you add that, and
00:16:19
I think this is my belief.
00:16:21
If you're a human being and you're checking the newsfeed on
00:16:23
a regular basis, spending time there, you will naturally
00:16:26
comment as you go through that feed as things inspire you.
00:16:30
You will naturally comment as you go through that feed as
00:16:32
things inspire you, and that is also going to give you hints as
00:16:33
to what content you should create to get comments yourself.
00:16:36
Look at what inspired you, in fact, and well, I'm stepping
00:16:41
ahead to the AI webinar that I'm planning.
00:16:42
You know, if you ended up commenting on five different
00:16:46
posts, copy and paste those posts in the chat GPT and ask
00:16:50
them are there any common threads that made you want to
00:16:54
comment on these posts?
00:16:54
Now, maybe it was because they were a friend of yours or you
00:16:57
hadn't seen them in the feed in a while.
00:16:59
There's lots of different reasons, but if it was just the
00:17:01
content, this is going to be a really, really important point.
00:17:04
And another point here about the content is when you're in the
00:17:08
feed, you begin to see the ultimate importance of having a
00:17:11
good hook.
00:17:12
This is especially important on LinkedIn.
00:17:14
You have to press the more button to see the entire content
00:17:17
.
00:17:17
Will you press the more button or not.
00:17:18
That comes down to the hook.
00:17:19
But the hook is universal, whether it is on social media,
00:17:24
in a blog post, in a video, in a podcast which is why I have
00:17:27
that teaser to begin my podcast the hook is critical and, like I
00:17:31
said, you're gonna lose your skill if you don't spend more
00:17:37
time in the feed.
00:17:38
And that's really.
00:17:40
I know that I've come a little roundabout here, beginning
00:17:43
talking about social media schedulers, but it's really
00:17:46
about spending more time in the feed and letting yourself be
00:17:48
inspired and being influenced by the feed.
00:17:51
It's no different than SEO optimization of your content.
00:17:55
We often optimize based on what is ranking well at the top of
00:17:58
search results, because we know that Google's AI has favored
00:18:01
that content for those search queries.
00:18:03
So there has to be something winning about them, and it's a
00:18:06
lot of different factors, but at the end of the day, the
00:18:09
newsfeed is showing you content that is winning and
00:18:12
over-reliance and scheduling tools can keep you away from
00:18:16
seeing that.
00:18:16
Now, if you're like me and you want to sort of, you know you
00:18:20
still have content that you want to add to scheduling tools and
00:18:22
maybe you continue to do it for certain networks or certain
00:18:24
formats, like I suggested.
00:18:26
But if you want to sort of put a pause on it, like I'm starting
00:18:28
to do with LinkedIn, do this Schedule a time to publish at
00:18:32
like 1 pm every day.
00:18:34
Turn it off, first of all, and a social be as a convenient
00:18:37
feature where we can turn on or off the publishing queue for
00:18:40
each social network.
00:18:40
Put your times to post at like 1 PM and make sure you publish
00:18:45
new content in the morning and let it be something that
00:18:47
inspires you, either from your feed, something that you saw on
00:18:51
the internet or email that you got, or something personal that
00:18:54
you want to share.
00:18:54
And for that day, if you don't want to publish something, then
00:18:59
when it's noon and if you haven't published something,
00:19:01
turn on your queue, publish something, then turn it off
00:19:03
again later in the afternoon and that way you know your.
00:19:06
Your reward, if you can publish in the morning, is you don't
00:19:10
have to publish a scheduled post , but you always have a backup.
00:19:12
You always have that queue there that you can always pull
00:19:14
into.
00:19:15
If you don't have the time to go into the newsfeed or to share
00:19:18
something or you have nothing to say, that's totally okay and
00:19:20
that happens.
00:19:21
But instead of relying on the scheduling tool as the first
00:19:25
priority.
00:19:25
We rely on it as a second priority.
00:19:27
So I'm not going to throw away social B.
00:19:29
It still has its use.
00:19:31
But I think, in the grand scheme of things, if you
00:19:33
deprioritize it and prioritize these other aspects of social
00:19:37
media marketing, for which there is no tool other than you, your
00:19:41
eyes, your brain, going into your feeds and being emotional
00:19:45
and being inspired and being creative that, my friends, is
00:19:49
the best tool that we as human beings have and, in this age of
00:19:52
AI, it is that tool that will help us win the battle in the
00:19:58
newsfeed on any given social network.
00:20:01
All right, well, I hope you enjoyed this conversation.
00:20:03
