00:01:16

00:01:18
This is episode number 360.
00:01:21
And yes, it has been a while since the last episode.
00:01:24
Thank you for all your notes.
00:01:25
There are some times where, in order to get things done, you
00:01:29
literally need to unplug a lot of other activities in order to
00:01:34
proceed forward on things that are strategic to your business.
00:01:37
What is unique about what I provide is that my product and
00:01:42
my marketing are sort of one in the same right.
00:01:45
They are all about this information and education
00:01:48
related around digital content, influencer, social media
00:01:52
marketing so sometimes things can get intertangled.
00:01:54
But, as you know, I've been working really hard on my next
00:01:57
book and really writing two books at once, because I'm
00:02:01
writing a book and a workbook that is going to be a companion
00:02:04
to that book, and I'm happy to say that I have progressed.
00:02:07
But there have been some delays and well, I hope to have a
00:02:12
better update for you in the near future.
00:02:14
Enough about my personal news.
00:02:16
I want to on this podcast and maybe future episodes based on
00:02:20
your feedback.
00:02:21
I want to give you some of the latest news that I've been
00:02:24
seeing and my analysis and my advice for you before we get
00:02:28
into today's main topic.
00:02:30
So a few things that obviously are happening right now in the
00:02:34
world.
00:02:34
We see the whole TikTok ban, which is obviously getting more
00:02:40
closer to reality here in the United States and even in Europe
00:02:44
we're starting to see the TikTok light battle ignite this
00:02:48
week.
00:02:48
So we do not know where TikTok is going, but we have not.
00:02:52
I guess TikTok in India and some other countries has been
00:02:56
completely banned.
00:02:56
I just think that at this point , tiktok is so intertwined with
00:03:01
youth, culture and with business .
00:03:03
A recent data showed that TikTok shop has really picked up
00:03:08
steam, and TikTok themselves have released this data that
00:03:11
says, hey, small businesses more and more rely on TikTok for
00:03:16
their marketing, for their business, as well as successful
00:03:18
creators, right.
00:03:19
So I cannot see TikTok being completely banned.
00:03:22
I could see, maybe, them having to sell off some of their
00:03:26
assets or what have you.
00:03:27
But if you are involved in TikTok, it would not stop me.
00:03:31
And if you've been thinking about getting involved in TikTok
00:03:34
for your business or for your own content creator business and
00:03:37
you put it on the sideline because you're not sure, I would
00:03:40
still go full steam ahead, because the content that you
00:03:43
create there you can use anywhere.
00:03:44
You can use in YouTube Shorts.
00:03:50
You can use in YouTube shorts, you can use an Instagram reels.
00:03:51
But TikTok is a different vibe and if you want to tap into, you
00:03:53
know what our youth alpha generation, or gen alpha, gen Z
00:03:56
and even younger millennials, what they think there is no
00:03:59
better place to do it than TikTok.
00:04:01
So my advice is full steam ahead on TikTok, regardless of
00:04:05
what you read in the media.
00:04:06
All right.
00:04:07
Another one I want to talk about is Meta announcing that they
00:04:11
are going to be using a new AI assist technology throughout all
00:04:15
of their properties Facebook, instagram, whatsapp Messenger.
00:04:18
This is really exciting because AI can be extremely helpful.
00:04:22
It is yet to be seen how this is going to impact the way we
00:04:25
use these sites, but considering the amount of time that we
00:04:28
spend on them, the ability to be able to tap into a AI assistant
00:04:32
right there, I think, just means it's going to become more
00:04:37
stickier and maybe we even start using some of these social
00:04:41
networking sites as search engines.
00:04:42
Why go to Google when we can get the answer right there in
00:04:45
our Facebook AI assistant?
00:04:47
So interesting times.
00:04:49
I urge you to sort of play around and understand how that
00:04:53
might affect the way we use these meta-owned sites, Hard to
00:04:58
say as businesses what we should do, as professionals what we
00:05:01
should do, but we should definitely be understanding of
00:05:05
what is going on in the world and better understand how we can
00:05:08
also leverage that for our business and for ourselves.
00:05:12
The third bit of news I want to bring up is a recent
00:05:16
conversation that Google had that actually trended on Twitter
00:05:20
and for some reason it made a Twitter trending topic on my
00:05:23
Twitter feed.
00:05:24
Sorry, I still call it Twitter.
00:05:25
I do not like calling it X, so call me old fashioned.
00:05:27
Regardless, it had a conversation where Google said
00:05:32
that you can rank high in search engine results without
00:05:35
necessarily a lot of backlinks.
00:05:37
You can rank high in search engine results without
00:05:39
necessarily a lot of backlinks, and the SEO community obviously
00:05:46
gave a backlash because generating backlinks is sort of
00:05:47
standard practice.
00:05:48
It's what a lot of SEO agencies actually do as part of their
00:05:50
business model, and also some people are saying well, if
00:05:52
Google says A, you should do B.
00:05:54
Because they're saying that, because they don't want to
00:05:56
encourage that behavior.
00:05:56
So you need to read between the lines.
00:05:58
Yada, yada, yada.
00:06:00
I will say just over the last two months, or I should say over
00:06:03
the last six months, there have been a lot of fundamental
00:06:06
changes in the Google search engine algorithm and I think you
00:06:10
have all seen them.
00:06:11
I have talked about them, I still continue to see them play
00:06:15
out and for a site like mine, for a variety of reasons, it has
00:06:18
not been positive.
00:06:19
Now there are many reasons to invest in content right Above
00:06:24
and beyond search engine rankings.
00:06:25
You still need content for your emails, for your social media,
00:06:28
for your web copy, and it takes time to build authority.
00:06:31
And what's interesting is that not every site has seen a
00:06:34
decline.
00:06:35
I see major brands are seeing an increase in website traffic.
00:06:39
So there are winners and losers and you need to have a
00:06:42
long-term approach.
00:06:43
But this news about Google, you know, devaluing the value of
00:06:47
backlinks.
00:06:48
I will say this and I have a dedicated chapter in my new book
00:06:52
about backlinks right, not because I can somehow monetize
00:06:56
that.
00:06:56
I do it because I still think it is a best practice, because
00:06:59
if you are a search engine, how do you judge the authority of
00:07:03
content coming from a domain?
00:07:04
There are many ways of judging it, obviously, but a backlink is
00:07:09
a very, very strong signal that I think still has value.
00:07:12
I think it's about the quality and the relevance of the
00:07:15
backlink, and I will agree with Google that I have had content
00:07:18
that ranks higher than major brands with more backlinks,
00:07:21
because I think my backlinks were more relevant.
00:07:23
So it is definitely not a volume game, but really it's the
00:07:28
search engine changes that I want to talk about today.
00:07:32
This is the topic of pivoting right, and I want to share with
00:07:36
you what I have been doing and my advice for you.
00:07:39
So pivoting in marketing is critical, especially in digital
00:07:44
marketing, is critical for a lot of reasons.
00:07:47
We can consider pivoting sort of how we adopt our strategy.
00:07:50
You've heard me talk about this PDCA approach of always having
00:07:54
a data-driven approach and it all ties in with that.
00:07:57
But it's also having a regular look at your data, at your
00:08:01
metrics, and actually making decisions and taking action.
00:08:05
Not waiting, but looking at what is happening now and
00:08:09
realizing that it is not going to go back to where it was
00:08:12
before.
00:08:12
It was not a blip, so the search engines definitely is not
00:08:17
going back to the way it was before.
00:08:19
You know Google has to compete against AI to begin with.
00:08:23
Google is also leveraging AI, so if you're already getting
00:08:26
generative AI in your results, that's a huge part of what you
00:08:30
see when you look at a search engine result, google is also
00:08:34
right, favoring community-based discussions.
00:08:37
From Reddit, from Quora, I have also found that Google in
00:08:41
general is favoring content that comes from well-established
00:08:45
brands Not all the time, but more than there were before.
00:08:49
And I also notice uncertain transactional keywords.
00:08:52
For instance, social media scheduling tools is a classic
00:08:56
one, where I just republished a blog post.
00:08:58
Google in the past would often have in the top 10 results.
00:09:01
A few of them would be the top X social media scheduling tools.
00:09:04
I personally prefer reading those posts because it gives me
00:09:08
an idea of what companies I should have in my radar and from
00:09:12
there I would do my research.
00:09:13
But now Google is directly putting up individual tool names
00:09:17
, thinking that, oh, people aren't looking for listicles,
00:09:20
they're actually looking for the tools.
00:09:21
And now you have to open up 10 different links to decipher and
00:09:26
find out what these tools are about and do you want to
00:09:28
purchase them or not.
00:09:29
And now these listicle types of sites have really been pushed
00:09:33
down radically in the rankings.
00:09:34
And all of this means that not being established brand, having
00:09:38
a lot of listicles still offering the same value, the
00:09:41
exact same content that generated a lot more traffic
00:09:44
just a few months ago generates a lot less traffic today, but I
00:09:48
still continue on because content is still an asset, it is
00:09:52
intellectual property and, in my case, as I begin writing my
00:09:55
next book even though this new book is not out yet more on that
00:09:58
to come in the near future I am just going through my blog
00:10:01
posts and realizing that I already have a book.
00:10:03
I already have 40, 50 words of content.
00:10:05
When I want to create a presentation for a speech that
00:10:09
I'll be doing in Mexico City in May hope to see some of you
00:10:12
there, hola, I can lean into the content that I've already done
00:10:15
research on that, I've already codified right, and I can reach
00:10:20
in.
00:10:20
And if you're a business, obviously for email sequences
00:10:22
and webinars, what have you?
00:10:24
You get the picture, but you need to pivot.
00:10:27
So I talk about in my book this library of content, and I
00:10:30
realized the library of content of keywords that I created is
00:10:34
just old.
00:10:34
I created it primarily in 2020 and 2021, and it's 2024.
00:10:39
People's search preferences are different, the technology is
00:10:43
different.
00:10:43
Everything has evolved right.
00:10:45
So it was a really really good exercise.
00:10:48
One of the reasons why I took a little break from podcasting was
00:10:51
to really you know, my entire SEO and content strategy relies
00:10:55
on my library of content, keyword research.
00:10:57
So I really invested the time to do it right.
00:11:00
And that research also includes confirming search intent, which
00:11:03
is literally going into Google search results for that keyword
00:11:06
and opening up a lot of tabs.
00:11:07
So it is very time consuming, but once you get it done, you're
00:11:11
done and then you can work off of that.
00:11:12
But I also realized once again it is a pivot.
00:11:15
It is a keyword pivot, but it's also understanding.
00:11:18
You know what, for certain keyword queries that I might've
00:11:21
used to have a chance of ranking in the top 10, that is not
00:11:24
going to happen today.
00:11:24
That is a huge pivot, which means now I can focus resources
00:11:30
on other keywords, other topics.
00:11:32
You get the picture.
00:11:34
Another interesting pivot that has happened because of the
00:11:37
search engine results, not just from a content creation
00:11:40
perspective, is the fact that inevitably, larger brands in
00:11:45
general are owning a lot of the top search engine results.
00:11:48
However, videos are coming up prominently from YouTube and the
00:11:53
videos aren't necessarily coming from large brands,
00:11:55
because a lot of content creators still rule YouTube and
00:11:59
that gives you a clue that in the age of AI and in the age of
00:12:03
these new search engine rankings , people are still looking for
00:12:06
video and, in fact, google has decided that YouTube is a key
00:12:09
differentiator, that people are going to use AI for some things
00:12:13
and they are going to use YouTube for others, and
00:12:16
therefore, why not put the YouTube results front and center
00:12:19
, meaning that, obviously, from an SEO perspective, youtube
00:12:22
videos and video in general in the era of AI, becomes all the
00:12:26
more important.
00:12:27
Another pivot that we need to make and we should take action
00:12:30
it's not about, oh, we need to start doing this.
00:12:33
It's like how and when are we going to start doing that and
00:12:37
are we going to start measuring the impact of that?
00:12:38
And obviously this goes beyond search Social media.
00:12:43
We've always had to pivot because the algorithms have
00:12:47
always been changing and we've always had to change.
00:12:49
We have new content formats, new social networks, so I think
00:12:52
that we all understand this, but at a deeper level, you know,
00:12:55
every month I look at the traffic that is generated from
00:12:58
social media, which obviously goes down over time as a
00:13:02
percentage of my traffic.
00:13:03
It had always gone down, but recently, with a decrease in
00:13:07
search engine traffic from Google, it actually now
00:13:09
comprises a larger percentage.
00:13:11
Right, once again, you need to have multiple revenue streams
00:13:14
and multiple marketing channels and know when to pivot from one
00:13:18
to the other strategically to be most effective.
00:13:21
The aha moment I had is that Twitter has really declined,
00:13:25
like really declined, and month to month it seems to decline.
00:13:28
But the last two or three months it has declined where, in
00:13:31
parallel, the traffic I'm getting from Pinterest is
00:13:34
blossoming again to where not only is Pinterest taking over
00:13:37
Twitter as the number one, but LinkedIn is now number two and
00:13:40
Twitter's gone down to number three.
00:13:41
So why am I investing more time on Twitter than I should be
00:13:47
doing on a Pinterest or LinkedIn ?
00:13:48
And this goes the same for your business.
00:13:50
I believe we should be nimble, we should be agile with our
00:13:53
pivoting, and the pivoting doesn't have to be a major pivot
00:13:56
, but it can be these small little pivots that can help us
00:14:00
be more effective.
00:14:01
And speaking of the search engines, I had shared with you
00:14:05
when I talked about how useful is your content.
00:14:07
When I talked about the early days of the latest Google
00:14:10
algorithm changes, I said you know, google hasn't necessarily
00:14:13
said that AI content is bad, although recently they seem to
00:14:18
equate a lot of AI content with spam.
00:14:20
But I was very transparent in that, starting in man back in
00:14:26
2020 or 2021, I had AI generated content at the end of my blog
00:14:31
posts in terms of frequently answered questions, so you
00:14:36
wouldn't even see them unless you got to the very end of the
00:14:39
blog post and they were 100% AI generated.
00:14:41
And, in fact, when I went to Jasper's AI conference and I met
00:14:45
up with some AI and marketing experts, they thought it was a
00:14:47
brilliant idea, right, and they were ranking in featured
00:14:50
snippets.
00:14:51
But one of the reasons why my content, or I should say my
00:14:55
search engine rankings have gone up, I don't know, but Google
00:14:58
has always said don't create content for search engines,
00:15:03
right?
00:15:03
Don't create YouTube videos for algorithms.
00:15:05
Create them for people.
00:15:06
Create content for people.
00:15:07
Add value.
00:15:08
If you're always adding value, the algorithms will catch it at
00:15:12
some point Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but at some
00:15:16
point.
00:15:16
And I realized the epiphany for me as part of this pivot is what
00:15:22
am I doing?
00:15:22
Those FAQs were clearly written for SEO and not for the purpose
00:15:29
of providing value to my reader .
00:15:31
Because guess what this is the other epiphany moment of the
00:15:33
pivot here If you're writing just simple FAQs or simple
00:15:38
content, search engines do not need that content.
00:15:41
That content is going to be provided in the form of
00:15:44
generative AI, right.
00:15:46
So this means that we need to go a little bit deeper with our
00:15:51
content and while you know, google has said, hey, don't
00:15:54
write any more words than you need to be short and concise.
00:15:57
What have you?
00:15:58
I still think that you know shorter and concise topics are
00:16:02
not going to be the topics of blog posts in the future.
00:16:05
So once again, we have to pivot , and one of the things I did
00:16:08
and while I do have a VA help for some aspects of my blog
00:16:12
management, I literally went through at the time about 715
00:16:16
blog posts and made sure that the FAQs were all deleted, right
00:16:21
.
00:16:21
There were other changes I made, but it was a really good sanity
00:16:24
check to say, hey, is this content still providing value?
00:16:27
Was it written for search engines?
00:16:28
Right, and it wasn't, obviously .
00:16:31
And I do use AI tools like Phrase F-R-A-S-E Go to
00:16:34
neilschafercom slash phrase for my affiliate link I'll put that
00:16:37
in the show notes as well which help align my content with the
00:16:41
search intent based on the top results that the search engines
00:16:45
are providing.
00:16:45
But the content is still human written and, in fact, even
00:16:48
though I have guest bloggers, I use AI detection tools to make
00:16:51
sure it is human written.
00:16:52
But it is a pivot right, and maybe the biggest pivot out of
00:16:56
all this, out of all these changes, is email is creating
00:17:02
more lead magnets, creating more ways, providing more
00:17:06
information, more value to expand my community of readers
00:17:12
and provide more value in those newsletters as well.
00:17:14
Like I want to create more value in this podcast by
00:17:17
introducing these three latest news topics.
00:17:20
So we always have to be pivoting .
00:17:21
Things are always changing.
00:17:23
If we rely on what worked yesterday, we are not going to
00:17:26
grow and I want to challenge you to look at your own marketing.
00:17:30
Do you see a downward spiral in any of the metrics that you're
00:17:34
looking at?
00:17:34
It is especially effective when you compare social media
00:17:37
channels or when you compare different things, different
00:17:41
channels, different topics and you have a dashboard or some
00:17:46
sort of reporting system or a Google sheet or an Excel
00:17:48
spreadsheet that allows you to do that on a regular basis.
00:17:51
Now in my upcoming book, I do have a dedicated chapter on
00:17:55
reports and this is one of the value-added features that I
00:17:57
offer for all of my Fraction of CMO clients is being able to put
00:18:00
this in a spreadsheet on a monthly basis to be able to
00:18:04
decide well, what is going to be our North Star going forward,
00:18:08
and the North Star.
00:18:08
This month might be different than last month.
00:18:10
It's about these micro pivots, right?
00:18:13
We're not talking about Netflix changing from a DVD to a
00:18:17
streaming model, or Adobe from a product-based to a SaaS model.
00:18:20
We're not talking about the business model pivot, but it is
00:18:24
the digital marketing pivot.
00:18:25
It is a strategic pivot.
00:18:26
It is also a tactical pivot and it has to happen a lot more
00:18:30
frequently than you think, just because that the speed of change
00:18:35
in technology, in algorithms, in consumer preferences, in the
00:18:39
digital transformation and in AI demands it more and more today.
00:18:44
So I want to challenge you right , and if you don't know how or
00:18:48
where to pivot, I want to invite you.
00:18:50
My digital first group coaching mastermind is now open for open
00:18:54

00:19:14
You know that I'm the real Neil , so it's spelled
00:19:16
N-E-A-L-S-C-H-A-F-F-E-R.
00:19:18
Always need to remind you of that.
00:19:19
I wish I had an easier to spell last name, but I don't.
00:19:22
Regardless, I hope that you will accept the challenge if you
00:19:26
need that help and if not, I hope that you will be as excited
00:19:30

00:19:33
So on a final note, on another personal note, I am going to be
00:19:37
traveling probably the week that you listen to this in Berlin,
00:19:41
germany, where I am actually working on my next book.
00:19:43
My next book is going to be going back to my roots as a
00:19:48
LinkedIn author and I continue to get business for LinkedIn
00:19:54
trainings.
00:19:54
I continue to get readers for my free LinkedIn book.
00:19:57
Go to neilschafercom slash freebies if you haven't
00:20:00
downloaded my Maximizing LinkedIn for Business ebook, and
00:20:03
I just continue to.
00:20:04
You know my UCLA extension class on personal branding how
00:20:08
to become an influencer.
00:20:09
I have a dedicated module on LinkedIn branding and I think
00:20:12
it's time to really codify that into a book and serve more
00:20:15
people with it.
00:20:15
So if you are looking for specific information on LinkedIn
00:20:19
that you don't think is out there or you think is lacking in
00:20:21
other books, maybe you have a case study that you want to
00:20:23
share with me for potential inclusion.
00:20:25
I'd love to hear from you, because over the next few months
00:20:27
I'm going to be shifting gears with the publication of this new
00:20:30
book, of working on my next book, which I'm really going to
00:20:33
push myself to try to publish this year as well, for a variety
00:20:36
of reasons.
00:20:37
So, once again, go to neilschafercom, slash contact,
00:20:40
or you can email me, neil N-E-A-L at neilschafercom.
